『ビートルズに続きブレイクしたリヴァプール出身のビート・グループが、66年にリリースした、米国オンリーのレア・アルバム(①～⑫)の初CD化。ハプニングスの①(全米28位)、サイモン＆ガーファンクルの⑦を収録とあって、現在では日本のソフト・ロック界隈のファンからも人気の高い一枚だ。いささか妖しげなレーベルからの発売だが、当時はプレス枚数の少なかったステレオ・ヴァージョンを使っており、マニアの方は要チェックだろう。今回注目したいのは、67年のグループ解散後にジェリー・マースデンがソロで発表したシングル音源8曲(～)。ジェリー主演でウェストエンドで上演されロングランとなったミュージカル‘Charlie Girl’からのものをはじめ、その後エンターテイナーの世界に入り成功を収めたジェリーの真骨頂がそこから浮かび上がってくる。ブリティッシュ・ビート・ブーム終焉以降、転道を余儀なくされたミュージシャンの‘その後’の成功例を窺い知るには、またとないアルバムだ。』

1966年に米国で発売された彼らのラストアルバム。2014年にワーナージャパンから紙ジャケで<全32曲>収録で再発されていますが、本CDは、2002年に米国 FIESTAから発売された<全32曲>入りです。曲数こそ同じですが、14曲目以降のボーナストラックが全く異なります。国内紙ジャケ盤は、モノ＆ステレオで全体の28曲が占められていますが、米FIESTA盤のにはLPオリジナル盤のステレオ音源14曲と⑮～には、1963年ザ・フォーモストによりリリースされたレノン＆マッカートニー作の「Hello Little Girl」をはじめ他のアルバムに収録されていない7曲が収録、また～の3曲はエド・サリバンショー出演時のもの(?)と思えるライヴ音源、そして極め付きは67年の解散以降にリリースされたジェリー・マースデンのソロ(もしくはGERRY MARSDEN ＆ DEREK NIMMO)名義の8曲が収録されている点です。同音源等が他のCDで発表されているのかは詳しく解りませんが、多分本CDでのみの収録と思います(詳しくは画像5を参照下さい)。
②は、
60年代の英国で一般的にリリースされていた4曲入りEP盤レコードから選曲した彼等のヒット曲とカヴァー曲をCD化したもの。こちらも⑲～の4曲はライヴ音源です。
③は、
『ブライアン・エプスタインが、プロデュースした同名映画のサントラ盤。シラ・ブロック、フォアモスト、マーティン・オーケストラのナンバーも1曲づつ入っているが、ペイスメイカーズの第2作として知られる傑作だ。ジェリー・マースデンのオリジナル曲が充実しているのがアルバムの質を高めた何よりの理由だし、シンガーとしての彼が最も充実していた時期でもあった。マーティンは、「ア・ハード・デイズ・ナイト」辺りのビートルズの方法論をそのままここに移行し、ワイルドなナンバーよし、アコースティック・ナンバーよしのアルバムに仕上げている。』

メンバーは、
Vo/G/ジェリー・マースデン, Dr/フレディー・マースデン, P/アーサー・マック, B/レス・チャドウィックの4人で結成。1966年10月解散。リバプール出身。
ビートルズとはほぼ同じ時期の1963年にデビューし、多くの全英NO.1ヒットを放ちました。ジェリー・マースデンの作曲力は、初期のポール・マッカートニーに非常に近い曲調を持ち、歌い上げる歌唱も心地よいです。1966年までが活動期でサイケデリック期に入る前の典型的な‘マージビート’はピアノがフィーチャーされた完成度の高い楽曲が並びます。映画「マージ―河のフェリーボート」に出演し同題名曲も大ヒットしました。この曲にインスパイアされて作られた曲は、竹内まりや「明日のない恋」や浜省「君去り夏」でしょうね。
ジェリー・マースデン氏は、英国らしいの哀愁のあるメロディーを残したソングライターでしたが、残念ながら2021年に78才で他界されたようです。 合掌

This CD debut features rare albums (①-⑫) released in 1966 by the Liverpool beat group that broke through after the Beatles. Featuring the Happenings' ① (which reached no. 28 in the US) and Simon & Garfunkel's ⑦, this album is currently highly sought after among Japanese soft rock fans. Though released on a somewhat shady label, it features the stereo version, which was pressed in limited numbers at the time, making it a must-see for enthusiasts. This collection focuses on eight singles (-) released by Jerry Marsden as a solo artist after the group's disbandment in 1967. Starting with tracks from the long-running West End musical "Charlie Girl," starring Jerry, these tracks showcase his true talents as he later entered the entertainment industry and achieved success. This is a rare album offering a glimpse into the success of musicians who were forced to change careers after the end of the British beat boom. "

their final album, released in the US in 1966. It was reissued in 2014 by Warner Japan in a paper jacket with 32 tracks, but this CD is the 32-track version released by FIESTA in the US in 2002. While the number of tracks is the same, the bonus tracks from track 14 onwards are completely different. The Japanese paper jacket version features 28 tracks in mono and stereo, while the US FIESTA version features 14 stereo tracks from the original LP. Tracks 15-17 include seven tracks not included on other albums, including the Lennon & McCartney-penned "Hello Little Girl," released by The Foremost in 1963. Tracks 18-19 are live recordings that appear to be from an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. And, best of all, eight tracks credited to Gerry Marsden (or Gerry Marsden & Derek Nimmo) released after the band's breakup in 1967 are included. It's unclear whether these tracks have been released on other CDs, but they're likely exclusive to this CD (see image 5 for details).
Track 2 is a CD of their hits and cover songs, selected from four-track EPs commonly released in the UK in the 1960s. Here too, four tracks ⑲- are live recordings.

The soundtrack to the film of the same name, produced by Brian Epstein. It includes one track each by Shira Block, Foremost, and the Martin Orchestra, but it's a masterpiece known as the Pacemakers' second album. The album's high quality is due in no small part to the abundance of Gerry Marsden's original songs, and it was also during this period when he was at his most productive as a singer. Martin applied the Beatles' methodology from around "A Hard Day's Night" directly to this album, resulting in an album filled with wild and acoustic numbers. "

The band consisted of four members: vocalist/guitarist Gerry Marsden, drummer Freddie Marsden, piano player Arthur Mack, and bassist Les Chadwick. They disbanded in October 1966. They were originally from Liverpool.
They debuted in 1963, around the same time as The Beatles, and had many UK No. 1 hits. Gerry Marsden's songwriting skills are very similar to those of early Paul McCartney, and his vocals are also pleasant to listen to. His active career continued through 1966, featuring a lineup of highly polished songs featuring piano, typical of the pre-psychedelic "Merseybeat" genre. He starred in the film "Ferryboat on the Mersey," and the song of the same name was a huge hit. Other songs inspired by this song include Mariya Takeuchi's "Love Without Tomorrow" and Sho Hamada's "You've Left Summer."
Gerry Marsden was a songwriter known for his characteristically British, melancholic melodies. Sadly, he passed away in 2021 at the age of 78. Rest in peace.
